Ayresome Park Cup Final

Tuesday May 6th 7pm at Riverside Stadium

Redcar and Cleveland U15  2 Hartlepool U15  3 AET

A fantastic final, to bring a climax Cleveland Schools’ successful and busy season, was held at The Riverside with Hartelpool emerging as victors 3-2 after extra time. The Ayresome Park Cup final originates back to 1968, but in all that time Hartlepool had never been victorious.

The game started with early chances to either side. Pools’ James Snowden showed the way with a shot just wide before Alex Bruton drew a fine save from Josh Noble to deny the tricky Redcar wideman. Both teams to their credit attempted to play a decent passing game with further chances for Matty Hughes and Danny Maddison for Pools and Redcar’s Kevin Hayes, before the best chance of the first half fell to Snowden who rounded the Redcar keeper Michael Algie, but fired his effort wide. Half time 0-0

You could sense that the game had goals in it and one quickly arrived in the first 10 mins of the second half when the lively Snowden struck a sweet left foot to give Pools the lead. Hughes nearly doubled the lead when his long range strike was well saved. However, Snowden added his second minutes later when a left foot strike slotted into the back of the net. Redcar nearly replied when Owen Armstrong’s strike was well saved and the same player was denied again by Noble just five minutes later. Snowden almost completed his hat-trick in the dying minutes of the allotted 80. However, in a dramatic 5 minutes of stoppage time Redcar completed a remarkable comeback with goals from Ben Watcham and Armstrong taking the game into the dreaded extra time.

Both teams continued to press and probe looking for the decisive blow but in a cruel moment a wonderful Hartlepool cross from the right was turned into the net by a Redcar defender to give the boys in blue and white their well deserved victory and in the process creating history by becoming the town’s first Ayresome Park Cup champions.  Pools’ manager, who had only taken over the team 5 months earlier, was extremely proud “I’m absolutely delighted for the boys. They worked so hard and have been a pleasure to work with” Man of the Match went to James Snowden. Special mention must go to Brian Auton who officiated the game superbly in what was his 20th year as a CSFA referee.

At half time presentations were made to all the County Cup winners and to Paul Braithwaite, England U18 Schoolboy international, who actually captained his country on 2 occasions. (see photo). Presentations were made by Bradley Fewster and Robbie Tinkler, MFC U18’s, Neil Bauser Chief Exec MFC and Carl Smith CSFA Chairman.

Hartlepool Schools FA captured the Cleveland Schools Under 13 Buckle Trophy following a three way tournament also involving Middlesbrough and Stockton.  The round robin format was played at Dyke House Sports and Technology College in Hartlepool and the three district assocations played each other twice in a league format. Hartlepool kicked off the morning with a narrow 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough before Stockton produced the performance of the day with an emphatic 4-0 victory over an under strength Middlesbrough squad. Defences were then on top as the next three games all ended goalless. The competition concluded with a deciding match between Hartlepool and Stockton and 'Poolie captain' Matthew Ridley was the home hero as he scored the only goal before lifting the trophy.

Busy week next week!

The Yorkshire Regiment Cup Final

On Thursday 3rd May the under 16’s Yorkshire Regiment County Cup formerly The Green Howard Cup took took place at the Middlesbrough F.C training grounds at Hurworth Darlington. The 1st Battalion The Green Howards historically have been sponsoring the Cup since 1972 until the formation of the Yorkshire Regiment then the second battalion have been proud to continue the support of this event.

The YRRT where asked to attend the final and assist with the presentation of the cup and to present the medals to the individuals who had taken part in the final. I was asked to pick up the medals from Maj Pat Ralf at The Green Howards Regimental Museum Richmond.

On arrival at Rockcliff Park me and the team where greeted by the Secretary of Cleveland Schools F.A (Mr Simon Carey) who kindly showed us around the training grounds and give us clear direction on the afternoons event. With which not all went according to plan as Simon Carey had been informed that a linesman would be unable to attend and he had to step up and fill the role.

Whilst showing us round both of the teams turned up, one team Acklam Grange where the current holders and the other Trinity C.C had a number of academy players from the local clubs. So it sounded like it was going to be a good match even before kick off.

As soon as it kicked off it was end to end action with both teams showing skill and determination. By the time the half time whistle was blown Trinity where 2 nill up with goals from Jake Hogg and Ben Askins. The second half was alot tighter and at points Acklam could have made a come back but towards the end of the match Trinity was given a penalty and Trinity’s defender Joe Griffiths stepped up and put into the net. The match finished 3-0 with a deserved win to Trinity.

Post match saw both teams congregate around the centre and Simon Carey gave the lads a Breif history of the cup and gave his thanks to all who attended. It then came to the medal presentations and the raising of the cup by Trinity’s Captain.

All in all despite the weather conditions it proved to be a great afternoons football.

Well done to all 3 teams for good performances at Northumberland at the weekend, despite the scorelines. U16 Andrew Gibson Trophy

This was due to be played as a round robin tournament but due to player unavailability and Redcar not having a team it  was held as one off match between Hartlepool and a combined Middlesbrough/Stockton team, with the latter running out as 2-1 winners with goals from Lee Ducker and Frankie Dimauro. Jack Stonehouse was the Hartlepool scorer.
